I was almost scared to open an email with the subject line “Hate Eternal.” But it wasn’t someone whose parking spot I’d stolen, it was Erik Rutan of death metal band Hate Eternal dropping us a line to say thanks for his royalty check.
The Florida band (whose founder/frontman Erik also toured with Morbid Angel in the 1990s) had racked up some SoundExchange royalties, and we’d been on them to register. Erik hadn’t gotten around to filling out the paperwork, but we kept reminding him. This week, we got this note:
“Thanks for your patience. You guys have been getting ahold of me for over a year now to get this done for there is a backlog of royalties for me. Thanks for all your help.”
We’re thrilled that Erik and Hate Eternal are now getting paid, but we wish it hadn’t taken so long. If you or a friend has received a note, social media message, or phone call from SoundExchange or one of our partners telling you about unclaimed royalties, don’t wait. Fill out the forms today and the next check we send out could be yours.
