Top Digital Streams of 2015 – Stations Respond to Listeners and Artists Demonstrate “Staying Power”

January 19, 2016

Music listeners showed their love for Drake, Fetty Wap and “Uptown Funk” in 2015. Once again, we are releasing our list of the most-streamed artists and tracks of 2015. A few of rock’s long-time superstars once again edged their way up the list of Digital Radio’s Top 20 Streamed Artists, joined by newer breakout artists.

Industry legends Bruce Springsteen and Pearl Jam continue to generate the volume of attention that keeps them on our list and are joined by Ed Sheeran, Meghan Trainor and Luke Bryan. There’s even an appearance by Kidz Bop Kids, a perennial parental favorite group that takes top hits and records new versions with modified lyrics and voices recorded especially for young listeners.

Here are the two major factors that bring artists to the top of our charts:

  1. Fans love them. Digital radio responds to listeners by streaming artists and songs that are the most popular.
  2. Staying Power. Artists with large music catalogs can be listened to over and over again by fans and remain popular over the long-term.

The Download on Our Data

We created these charts based on data provided to SoundExchange from more than 2,500 digital radio services. The recordings featured were played between October 1, 2014 and September 30, 2015.  For an artist to qualify as a “Breakout Artist,” that artist must have earned 99% of their total SoundExchange royalties (of all time) in the 12-month period ending September 30, 2015.

Check out the charts below to see if there are any surprises!
