Digital Music Services Alert: Copyright Office Increases Filing Fee for Notices of Use

The Copyright Office announced that it will increase the Notice of Use filing fee from $25 to $40, effective May 1, 2014. As a reminder, services must notify copyright owners of their intent to rely on the statutory license by submitting a Notice of Use of Sound Recordings Under the Statutory License and a one-time payment to the Copyright Office (not to SoundExchange). Once a service files a Notice of Use, the service can begin streaming, provided that it complies with the terms and conditions of the statutory license. If a service needs to amend a Notice of Use that was previously filed, the service can simply complete the Notice of Use form with corrections, check the box for “Amended Filing,”and resubmit to the Copyright Office – no payment required. The form can be located on the Copyright office’s website. For more information visit out Licensing 101 page.
