Making the Grade: A Lesson in SoundExchange Membership (and How Members are Different than Registered Users)

Students are returning to school, so this is a good time for a short lesson. Don’t worry – there’s no test.

SoundExchange has paid more than $4 billion in digital performance royalties to date. But you must register with us to receive those royalties. That process is simple and keeps getting easier, especially now with our online registration.

But why stop there? You can also become a SoundExchange member.

This is the part of the lesson where we tell you how to become a member and why it’s beneficial, so pay attention – remember, there is no test.

Registration is different than membership (that was the first takeaway from today’s lesson).

At the end of your registration you will see our membership section. All you have to do is check a box and sign the form to become a member. This is the part of the lesson where you raise your hand and ask “why should I become a member if I’ve already registered?”

That’s a great question.

When you become a member, SoundExchange will collect your royalties domestically and worldwide because we have international partnerships in place that allow us to collect and pay artists and rights owners performance royalties when their music is played outside the U.S. (that was the second takeaway from today’s lesson).

After you check a box and sign the form to become a member, you’ll be asked to sign an international mandate form, which will allow us to begin collecting your international royalties. That means more money in your pocket.

It’s important to remember membership is free (that was the third takeaway from today’s lesson).

Membership also provides access to exclusive deals with partners including CD Baby, Billboard and Berklee Online.

So let’s review.

SoundExchange membership is free.

Registration alone doesn’t grant you access to all that SoundExchange has to offer. In order to take advantage of all the perks available, you have to become a SoundExchange member. Those benefits include:

  • International collection. When your recordings are played around the globe, SoundExchange can collect those royalties for you, for no added fee. With 45 international performance rights agreements in 34 territories around the world, we ensure your international money isn’t left on the table.
  • Savings on gear, events and more. We offer our members exclusive discounts on services, conferences, equipment and continuing education. From web design and studio booking to online degree programs from the Berklee College of Music, we aim to support every aspect of our members’ creative success.
  • Insider access and industry information. As a member, you’re eligible to participate in exclusive SoundExchange and industry events, educational sessions and discounts to select services.
  • Government advocacy. SoundExchange is dedicated to defending music creators, performers and investors, making sure they’re paid fairly for their work. Our members receive timely updates about policy issues that are critical to creators.

You can contact us at 1-800-961-2091 or accounts@soundexchange.com and tell us you want to become a member. You can also register online and find important forms and other info here.

That’s the end of our lesson in membership. And you didn’t have to take a test!
