The deal between Warner Music Group Corp. (WMG) and Clear Channel Media and Entertainment recognizes that broadcasters depend on music and that music in fact has value. But we must always remember that a private agreement cannot replace a legislated terrestrial performance right. Instead, we believe the agreement shines a spotlight on the need for every broadcaster to compensate every recording artist whose work it uses. We firmly believe only a legal performance right will create the opportunity for all U.S. artists to receive payments they are rightfully due from all broadcasters. SoundExchange remains committed to a future where musicians, copyright owners and record labels alike will receive fair pay for the music we enjoy and love.
We are especially pleased to hear from WMG that the artists’ shares of the licensing revenues will be distributed through SoundExchange. We are also glad that WMG shares our commitment to ensuring that artists participate directly and immediately in the growing revenue stream from digital radio.
