Helaine S. Klasky was appointed to Chief Communications Officer of Sound Exchange in January 2019. In this role, Klasky will lead the company’s global public policy, communications and industry relations efforts.
She served as a Strategic Advisor to Handshake Consulting and was previously the chair of Burson-Marsteller’s U.S. public affairs and crisis practice focusing primarily on tech clients. Before joining Burson Marstellar, Helaine worked for more than seven years at GE where she created and led GE’s global public affairs function and later, served as the CCO for GE Energy Management.
Prior to GE, Helaine spent eight years as chief communications officer and associate vice president at Yale University overseeing communications for Yale College and the professional and graduate schools and serving as senior advisor to the President of Yale. Before her time at Yale, she was deputy assistant secretary at the US Department of the Treasury focusing on international and anti-money laundering initiative. Earlier in her career, Helaine served as spokesperson and deputy assistant US trade representative for public affairs and as director of media relations at the US Department of State. She began her career on Capitol Hill working for Senators Edward Kennedy and Dennis DeConcini.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of California, Berkeley and holds masters’ degrees from University Virginia and The American University.
She is passionate about music and an avid reader. She resides in Bethesda, MD with her husband and two teenage sons.
