Title: Assistant Controller
Department: Finance

Job Location: Washington, DC (hybrid)

Position Summary:

The Assistant Controller will be an independent, hands-on, and self-directed individual responsible for all aspects of corporate accounting. This position reports directly to the Controller and must be able to balance and prioritize multiple tasks, as well as deliver high-quality results and customer service to various levels of management across the company.

Essential Functions:

  • Manage the day-to-day activities of the Finance Department’s operations which includes initiating and recording all transactions related to accounts payable, distributions, employee expense reimbursements, salaries and benefits, royalty collections, investments, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, capitalized software costs, leases, and intercompany transactions for four legal entities, etc.
  • Manage monthly, quarterly, and annual close process and timelines, including reviewing reconciliations for accuracy and the preparation and review of various internal and external reports and the stand-alone and consolidated financial statements within required close timeline.
  • Review and analyze the Company’s individual and consolidated monthly and annual financial statements for accuracy and compliance with GAAP and the Company’s policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for ensuring an adequate system of internal controls, monitoring effectiveness of controls and implementing changes as required.
  • Manage the financial statement audits and other audits (401K, IT), including coordinating and managing audit timeline, preparing, and reviewing audit workpapers and the audit report.
  • Research applicable accounting standards, documenting company accounting treatment and implementing processes and procedures to ensure compliance.
  • Responsible for ensuring timely and adequate payments, including the monthly royalty, weekly vendor and employee reimbursements, and ensuring all related accounting transactions are recorded properly.
  • Serve as a day-to-day contact for staff, management, and other departments by researching and implementing accounting treatment for transactions where necessary.
  • Work with the Controller to determine allocation of responsibilities amongst team members and to ensure that all expectations of the accounting department are met.
  • Manage, train, motivate, and evaluate staff within the Accounting team.
  • Responsible for managing, organizing and achieving department goals within established timelines.
  • Manage Great Plains application support, account administration, security access controls, and application enhancements.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSAs):

  • Creative problem-solving skills to identify and implement new and modified systems, policies and procedures to improve accounting operations, internal processes and financial information.
  • Extensive experience in implementing, operating and documenting complex automated applications.
  • Ability to organize and concisely present verbal and written communications.
  • Proficient in presenting complicated financial information in a manner that is easily understandable and meaningful to an audience that is not well-versed in financial terms.
  • Strong Microsoft Office and other computer skills (proficient use of Excel and Power Point required).
  • Experience with automated accounting systems (Great Plains is preferred) is essential, evaluation of alternative systems to meet an organization’s needs, design of charts of accounts, developing and implementing reports, and transferring financial data to spreadsheet programs for further analysis and reporting. Experience in an environment which integrates financial accounting (the General Ledger) with operational systems in highly desirable.
  • Experience with Concur Travel & Expense module required.
  • Experience in the music/entertainment or software development industries a plus.
  • At least 6 years in a people management role, with strong experience leading, motivating, and developing talent.

Required Education, Certifications/ Licenses, Related Experience:

  • CPA required
  • BA/BS Finance or Accounting degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 10+ years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong end-to-end AP experience in a high volume, fast paced environment
  • Knowledge of basic accounting principles, use of Chart of Accounts and month-end close process
  • Exposure to annual budgeting and forecasting process a plus

  • This position requires the ability to remain in a stationary position (standing and/or seated) more than half the time
  • The person in this position may need to move about the corporate office(s) more than half the time
  • This position requires the ability to spend more than half the time viewing computer monitors
